We nurture these pups inside our home. During the day they are with Beckett in her "whelping box" which is right off our family room. This keeps them within distance for us to watch and hear them, and for them to be exposed to everyday sounds which includes TV, dishwasher, microwave, rattling of dishes, barking of their mother and grandmother and the door bell when it rings for deliveries. Also, family and neighbors come to visit and sometimes (when they're older) we even play a DVD that includes various sounds including thunder, jet airplanes and gunshots. This results in puppies grown to adulthood that are not sensitive to ordinary sounds that seem to scare some adult dogs. While some puppies grow to 8 weeks in a kennel, where they only see and hear a human at breakfast and dinner time, our pups are part of a family from their first day.
Also, for the first 3-4 weeks we weigh the pups twice a day. This ensures that they are each receiving enough nourishment and, if needed, they are given preferential spots at the "milk bar". Additionally, they are handled by loving human hands at least twice a day while they are just newborn. Human smells and handling are part of their life from birth.
At night we bring the whelping box upstairs to our bedroom for the first 3 1/2 weeks. This way we can be sure any night time problems (like the mother inadvertently lying on one of the pups) can be corrected immediately. Like during the day, they are used to sleeping with TV sounds in the background.
Once they are about 4-5 weeks old we set up an "exercise pen" in the kitchen eating area for their play and sleep area. They always have toys to play with and always get attention from us as we pass by. If you look at the January 2014 litter Group Pictures at 6 weeks you can see that Beckett was into collecting and organizing the litter's toys on our back porch.
